The recently launched iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max boast a revamped chassis, crafted from what Apple claims is high-grade titanium. A drop test video just circulated, setting off alarms about the resilience of this fresh design, particularly focusing on the device's innovative curved edges.
Tech reviewer JerryRigEverything has now conducted his yearly durability examination of the iPhone 15 Pro series and his findings raise eyebrows.
Throughout the testing procedure, the new grade 5 titanium was subjected to a gamut of tests including scratch resistance, heat tolerance, and sandpaper tests. As one might anticipate, taking a knife to the titanium does result in visible scratches. However, the matte finish of the rear glass shows exceptional resistance to scratching.
The smartphone's display holds up impressively well against scratch tests, and the trio of rear camera covers also show remarkable durability. That said, the test takes an unexpected turn rather quickly.
"As we delve into evaluating the blended structure of aluminum and titanium, let's see if it impacts the iPhone 15 Pro Max's structural integrity," says JerryRigEverything, exerting force on the phone. Within moments, a cracking sound is heard, and the back glass shatters instantaneously.
"This caught me off guard," he continues. "I've been evaluating the sturdiness of smartphones for over a decade, and this rarely happens. iPhones, in particular, are known for their robustness, but the speed at which this iPhone 15 Pro Max broke is unusually fast."
On the internal side of things, the iPhone 15 Pro Max survives the ordeal unscathed, as do its screen and frame. The Achilles' heel is clearly the back glass.
JerryRigEverything theorizes that the titanium's tensile strength, being five times greater than aluminum, might be contributing to the back glass's inability to handle even the slightest pressure or flex. On a positive note, Apple has made back glass replacement significantly more affordable this year.

Sia famously sang in David Guetta’s 2011 anthem “Titanium”: “You shoot me down, but I won't fall. I am titanium." Unfortunately, it seems Apple's interpretation of titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro doesn't quite measure up.
