Automate iPhone Orientation Lock Switching for Select Apps: A Step-by-Step Guide

Fed up with manually switching your iPhone's Orientation Lock for specific apps? Discover how to effortlessly automate this process on iOS.

In iOS, certain apps offer a different visual experience when you switch your iPhone from portrait to landscape orientation. While this behavior may not always be desirable, Apple provides the Orientation Lock feature in Control Center to address this issue.

However, some apps work better without Orientation Lock enabled, such as YouTube or the Photos app, where landscape orientation enhances the fullscreen viewing experience.

If you usually keep Orientation Lock on, you have to manually disable it in Control Center every time you open these apps to enjoy fullscreen mode. Then, when you're done with the app, you must remember to re-enable Orientation Lock, which can be inconvenient. Thankfully, there's a straightforward solution—a personal automation that takes care of this process for specific apps, eliminating the need to constantly access Control Center.

The following steps show you how it's done.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and select the Automation tab.

  2. Tap the plus symbol in the top-right corner of the screen.

  3. Tap Create Personal Automation.

  4. Scroll down and select App.

5. Make sure Is Opened and Is Closed are both checked, then tap the blue Chooseoption.

6. Select the apps that you want the automation to work with, then tap Done.

7. Tap Next.

8. Tap Add Action.

9. Start typing "Set Orientation Lock" into the search field, then select the script in the search results

when it appears.

10.Tap Next in the top-right of the Actions screen.

11. Toggle off the switch next to Ask Before Running, then tap Don’t Ask in the confirmation prompt.

12. Tap Done to finish.

Once you've created the automation, it will be stored in the Shortcuts app and automatically triggered whenever you open or close the chosen apps. However, it's important to note that if the Orientation Lock is already disabled and you open one of the selected apps, the automation will inadvertently enable the lock again, resulting in the opposite outcome you intended.
